Carports Sydney

Picking the right design

So you are thinking about building a carport?

I bet a few questions are popping up in your head

What carport designs are out there?

Should I build a metal carport or a timber carport?

Does my carport need council approval?

How much will my carport cost?

Should I build a DIY carport?

Good news…

We can help you with any questions you may have about your carport and hopefully this post will give you a good insight to your new carport.

Where to start…

Your options are either coming up with a carport design you like or getting assistance from one of our pergola consultants.

The best way to get the carport built is to go through the correct steps.

So what are the steps on how to build a carport.

Step 1 – Choosing the best carport design for you

Not all houses are created equally so it is critical that you choose the best carport to suit your house. Now that means considering your carport layout, carport style, carport material and carport colour.

Different materials can include:

  • Colorbond carports (steel carport)
  • Timber carports
  • Colorbond sheet roofing
  • Polycarbonate roofing
  • Gable carport (pitched carport)
  • Flat carport (skillion carport)
  • Structural steel carport
  • Curved carport
  • Insulated carport

Half Price Patios offer free quotes with experienced consultants that will happily spend time with you to come up with the optimum carport design.

Options are open to go with a DIY carport as well.

Step 2 – Drafting carport plans and getting council approval

So you have come up with a carport idea with your consultant and are keen to get it built ASAP.

That is great, although you must make sure that the carport council approval is in place.

There are some approval exemptions for carports that you may fall under (for carports in Sydney) although sometimes this will not be the case and you will need to get either a CDC approval or a council approval for your carport.

This task can be a little tricky at times although a Half Price Patio consultant can do what it takes to get your carport approval for you.

If you decide to complete the task on your own, make sure you do it in this manner:

  • Get a carport plan drafted
  • Make sure your plan complies with council or CDC controls for carports
  • Prepare approval package and application following council or CDC matrix for carports
  • Lodge plans and documentation

Once approved you can move to step 3.

Step 3 – Carport construction

Now it is time to build a carport.

You can go with a DIY carport if you are keen to build a carport on your own, although if you are not sure how to build a carport, then it may be wise to use a professional patio company like us to install the carport for you.

When building the carport, make sure to get all inspections done along the way that are outlined in your carport approval. If you are using a patio company to construct a carport, they will do this for you.

Once completed, hand in your certificates to the PCA for O.C, and it is done.
